Satu Maaranen

Biography

Finish-born Satu Maaranen is a Fashion Designer specialised on handpainted prints and sculptural shapes. Maaranen graduated in 2012 from Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture. Her graduate collection won first prize at the prestigious Hyéres Fashion Festival 2013 by unanimous decision. In 2015 she was nominated in the British Design Museum’s annual Designs of the Year Awards in Fashion category among 7 other nominees including Raf Simons, J.W. Anderson and Thomas Tait. She has also been recognised by the Elle Style Awards 2012 and the Designers’ Nest Awards 2011.

Maaranen has since been featured in leading international titles including Monocle, Forbes, Marie Claire, i-D, Harper’s bazaar, L’Officiel, The Business of Fashion, Interview Magazine, Women’s Wear Daily and various editions of Elle and Vogue. Her work has also been showcased in exhibitions and in print, including projects with filmmakers commissioned by Vogue Italia.

Before switching to fashion Maaranen’s backround is in art studies. She began her career at iconic finish design house Marimekko, at Christian Wijnants and in Italian textile house ERICA Industria Tessile Spa designing prints and making research for clients such as Prada, Max Mara and Dolce & Gabbana. In Spring 2014 Maaranen launched a capsule collection SATU MAARANEN X PETIT BATEAU in collaboration with iconic French Brand Petit Bateau.

Her designs has been seen on Chinese super model Sui He, Carmen Dell’Orefice, Pat Cleveland, Swedish Actress Matilda Von Essen and on Leaf Greener, Style Icon, Stylist and a former Senior Fashion editor of Elle China.

Maaranen is working commissioned- based in Helsinki and abroad.
